So, You Want To Audition For MasterChef

Five pieces of advice from a MasterChef finalist on how to get cast on the show.

An early-morning selfie from the audition line back in October 2013.

TIP #1: HAVE A ~LEWK~

The blue dress I wore to the camera test part of the audition, which became the dress I wore in press photos, and on the first episode of the show. I wore this damn dress for two weeks straight.

TIP #2: BRAND YOUR COOKING STYLE

TIP #3: IMPRESS THEM WITH A SINGLE BITE

Spinach lasagna, made and photographed by the author (not the audition lasagna).

TIP #4: BRUSH UP ON THE CULINARY ARTS

One of the show’s challenges was deboning an entire King Salmon; I did well because I‘d practiced deboning small and inexpensive whole fish before I went on the show.

TIP #5: LEARN TO LOVE THE CAMERA

A screen shot from one of the two cooking videos that lives on my mostly-defunct YouTube channel. Spend time watching amateur YouTube cooking videos and watch how people bring personality to their recipes.

IN SHORT, BE UNFORGETTABLE

I’m a west coast-based creative director at New York-based ad agency MRY, and the season 5 Masterchef runner-up. I love mayonnaise, yoga, cats, and pizza.
